5 Signs Your Child Is Ready for Dance Class (And How to Try for £10)
Wondering if your toddler or pre-schooler is ready for ballet or dance? Five clear signs, plus how to try a class in Chipping Norton or Fairford with no commitment.

You’ve seen them bop to the theme tune, copy moves from a screen, or spin until they’re dizzy just for the fun of it. So you’re wondering: Is my child ready for dance class? Lots of parents in the Cotswolds and Oxfordshire ask the same thing. The good news is you don’t need to guess. There are clear signs that a child is ready to enjoy and benefit from a structured dance class, and an easy way to try without pressure or long-term commitment.

1. They move to music without being asked
If your child naturally taps, sways, jumps or claps when they hear music (in the car, at home, in a shop), that’s one of the strongest signs they’re ready for dance. They’re already responding to rhythm and enjoying how their body can match the beat. Dance class gives that instinct a supportive place to grow. At Intune Dance, our RAD ballet, Dance Explorers and street dance classes all build on this. We use music and imagination so that even the youngest children (from age two and a half) can join in. You’re not signing them up for something foreign. You’re giving structure to something they already love.
2. They can follow simple instructions in a group
They don’t need to be the most obedient child in the room. But if they can generally listen to a grown-up, wait their turn, and copy a simple action when asked (“clap your hands”, “jump like a frog”), they’re usually ready for a short, age-appropriate class. Our teachers are used to wobbly attention spans and the odd wander. Classes are designed to be short, playful and clear, so children can succeed without having to sit still for long. If your child can join in a nursery rhyme or a simple game at home or at pre-school, they’re likely ready for a first dance class in Chipping Norton or Fairford.

3. They’re curious about other children or new activities
Some children are bold. Others hang back at first. Both can be ready for dance. The sign to look for is curiosity. They watch other children, ask to “have a go”, or get excited when you mention “dance” or “ballet”. You might notice them dressing up, pretending to be a dancer, or asking to watch dance on screen. That interest is enough. Our Saturday morning classes in Chipping Norton and Fairford are small and led by qualified, gentle teachers. Even shy children often settle within a few weeks. You don’t need a confident performer. You need a child who’s willing to try.
4. They’re in the right age range, and you’re ready for a Saturday morning
We welcome children from two and a half in our First Steps and Dance Explorers classes (creative movement and pre-school dance). From around four or five, children can join RAD ballet or street dance. If your child is in that range and shows any of the signs above, they’re in the right window. The only other “readiness” is practical. Our classes run on Saturday mornings in Chipping Norton and Fairford. If that fits your family and you’re open to a low-pressure trial, you’re in a good place to try.

5. You want them to build confidence, not become a prodigy
Parents who get the most out of children’s dance classes are usually the ones who care more about confidence, coordination and joy than about exams or stages. If that’s you, and you want them to stand a bit taller, make friends and enjoy moving, then you’re aligned with what we do. We teach proper RAD technique and follow a clear syllabus, but we weave it into play, stories and imagination. The goal is for every child to feel seen and to grow at their own pace. That mindset means you’re ready to find the right class for them.
What if my child is shy or hesitant?
Lots of our happiest dancers were quiet or clingy on day one. Small classes, the same teacher each week and a no-pressure atmosphere mean that many children who “just watch” at first are joining in fully within a few weeks. For the very youngest, parents can often stay in or near the room until their child feels safe. “Readiness” doesn’t mean “bold”. It means they’re in the right age range, they show some interest in music or movement, and you’re willing to give them a gentle first try.
How to try a class without commitment
You don’t need to decide now if dance is “for them”. We offer a £10 trial class with no obligation to continue. You choose a class that matches your child’s age (using our class finder on the homepage), book the trial and come along on a Saturday morning in Chipping Norton or Fairford. If they love it, we’ll help you secure their place for the term. If not, you’ve lost nothing but a tenner and an hour, and you’ll know you’ve given it a fair go.
