Street dance is the class children ask to come back to. It is fast, loud and full of character, and it builds coordination, strength and stamina while they are busy enjoying themselves. We follow the DANG syllabus, so there is genuine skill development behind the fun.

Children learn foundation moves from hip hop, popping, locking, waving and tutting, then string them together into routines. Confidence tends to arrive quickly here, because there is no single right way to look and every child is encouraged to bring their own style.

Inside the class

What happens in a street dance class

Warm-up and foundations

An energetic warm-up, then the building blocks: bounces, rocks, grooves and isolations that everything else is built on.

Musicality and timing

Hitting the beat is most of street dance. Children learn to hear the rhythm in a track and move with it rather than alongside it.

Routines and freestyle

Each term builds towards a routine, with freestyle sections where children make their own choices and try out ideas.

A syllabus behind the fun

The DANG syllabus sets out technique, performance and musicality for each stage, so children are learning properly and not just moving to music.

Progression

Where street dance leads

Junior Street Dance suits children from Year 1 upwards, including complete beginners. Plenty of our street dancers also take ballet, which builds the strength and control that make the harder street moves possible. Ask us about doing both in one Saturday morning.

What to wear

Comfortable joggers or leggings, a t-shirt, and trainers kept clean for indoor use. Nothing special is needed for a first class.

Common questions

What parents ask us about street dance

What is street dance?
Street dance covers the social dance styles that grew out of hip hop culture, including popping, locking, waving and tutting. Our classes teach the foundation moves and put them together into routines children can perform.
Is street dance suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. Nobody is expected to arrive knowing anything. Moves are broken down slowly, repeated often, and built up over the term so children can see themselves improving.
Do boys come to street dance?
They do, and street dance is often the class that gets them through the door in the first place. Our classes are open and welcoming to every child.
Can my child do street dance and ballet?
Many children do exactly that. The two styles complement each other: ballet gives strength, alignment and control, and street dance gives freedom, rhythm and performance confidence. Get in touch and we will help you build a Saturday morning that works.
What should they wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing they can move in, plus indoor trainers. Long hair is best tied back. There is no uniform to buy before a first class.
