What Age Should Children Start Dance Classes?
Two and a half? Four? Six? The honest answer depends on your child — and on finding the right class for their stage.

It is one of the most common questions parents ask when they first enquire about classes: "Is my child old enough to start?"
The short answer is: from two and a half, children can benefit enormously from a well-structured, age-appropriate dance class. But the longer answer — and the more useful one — is that it depends on your child, and on finding the right class for their developmental stage.
Starting at two and a half: Dance Explorers and First Steps
We welcome children from two and a half into our Dance Explorers and First Steps sessions. These are not mini adult classes. They are not about pointing toes or learning positions. They are about music, imagination, movement and fun.
At this age, children are learning to follow simple instructions, move their bodies with intention, take turns and work in a group. Our pre-school classes are designed entirely around those developmental goals. We use stories, props, ribbons and music to make every session feel like a different adventure — and in doing so, children build coordination, balance and rhythm without ever feeling like they are being taught.
Parents often tell us that they were not sure their two-year-old was "ready" — and that within a few sessions their child was asking about dance every single day.
Starting at four or five: Pre-Primary and Primary Ballet, Street Dance
From around four, many children are ready for slightly more structured classes. At this age they can follow a sequence of movements, respond to musical cues and begin to understand the idea of practising something to get better at it.
Our RAD Pre-Primary and Primary ballet classes are designed for this age group. They blend real Royal Academy of Dance technique with imaginative play — so children are learning proper ballet positions and musicality, but in a way that feels like a game rather than a lesson.
Street dance classes for younger children are equally well-suited to this age. The focus is on rhythm, style and self-expression, and the structure suits children who prefer movement that feels more free.

Starting later: six, seven, eight or beyond
There is absolutely no upper limit on when a child can start. We have children join us at six or seven who have never danced before and who quickly find their feet (quite literally). Older beginners often have a natural focus and coordination that younger starters lack, and they can progress quickly.
If your child has expressed an interest in dance at eight or nine and never had the chance to try it, do not be put off. A good first class is a good first class at any age.
Not sure which class is right for your child's age? Our class finder makes it easy. And the £10 trial means you can try before you commit.
The most important question: is this class right for my child right now?
More important than age is fit. A three-year-old in a class designed for six-year-olds will struggle. A five-year-old in a class that is really just free play will get bored. The class needs to match where your child is, developmentally and temperamentally.
Signs that the timing is right:
- Your child can follow simple instructions for a short period
- They are interested in music and movement
- They can manage being apart from you for the length of a class
- They enjoy being around other children, or are curious about it
Signs that you might wait another term:
- They are not yet confident separating from you
- They struggle to follow any group instruction
- They are very easily overwhelmed in new environments
Neither of these is permanent. Children change quickly. A child who is not ready today may be completely ready in three months. That is why a £10 trial is such a useful starting point — it is low stakes enough to try, and honest enough to tell you what you need to know.
