Your Child's First Dance Class: What to Expect (and What to Bring)
First classes can feel daunting — for parents as much as children. Here's exactly what to expect when you walk through the door at Intune Dance for the first time.

That nervous-excited feeling the morning of a first dance class? Parents feel it too.
Will she join in? Will he cry when I leave? What if they hate it? What do I even bring?
Here is a clear, honest guide to what actually happens when you come to your first class at Intune Dance — so you can walk in feeling prepared rather than anxious.
Before you arrive
What to wear
For a trial class, you do not need specialist dancewear. Comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow free movement are fine — leggings, a t-shirt or a little dress. Bare feet or socks work well for younger children in Dance Explorers and First Steps.
If you decide to continue after the trial, we can advise on the appropriate dance shoes and any uniform requirements for the specific class. But for the first session, just dress comfortably.
What to bring
- A small water bottle
- Something for your child to change into if needed
- Nothing else — keep it simple
What time to arrive
Arrive a few minutes before the class starts. It means your child gets the full session, and arriving before the room fills up gives nervous children time to take in the space first. That extra few minutes can make a real difference to how settled they feel when the music starts.
When you arrive
You will be welcomed by the teacher or a member of our team. We will check that we have your child's name and age, confirm the class details, and let you know where to wait.
For most of our classes — particularly for younger children on a first visit — parents are welcome to sit at the edge of the room or just outside the door. You know your child. If they need you nearby, you can be nearby. We will never make you leave before your child is ready.

During the class
The teacher will introduce themselves to your child warmly. There is no formal roll call or name badge — just a hello, a smile, and an invitation to join in.
If your child hangs back at first, that is completely normal. Some children watch for ten minutes before they try anything. Some sit beside the teacher for two or three sessions before they feel ready to join the group. We work at each child's pace.
The class itself will follow a consistent format — a warm-up, some theme-based activities, short bursts of technique work that feel like games, and a familiar closing sequence. There will be music, props, and movement. It will not look like a serious lesson. It will look like fun.
After the class
The teacher will give a short stamp or sticker to each child as they leave — a small ritual that children take very seriously and look forward to enormously.
Take a moment to chat with the teacher if you have questions. They will give you an honest view of how your child did and what they think. If you are unsure whether to continue, say so. There is no pressure.
If your child loved it, brilliant. You can book the next class or sign up for the term at the front desk or online.
If your child was unsure, that is also completely fine. It sometimes takes two or three sessions for children to settle — especially shy or cautious children. The £10 trial gives you enough time to see the real picture rather than just the first impression.
Thinking about booking? The trial is just £10, with no commitment to continue. We would love to welcome your family. Use the class finder to choose the right session for your child's age.
A few things we hear from parents after a first class
"She was nervous on the way there and didn't want to leave at the end."
"He stood and watched for the first half, then suddenly just joined in."
"I expected to spend the whole class in the corridor, but she walked straight in."
"I cried a little bit watching her try so hard."
Every first class is different. But what we see, again and again, is that children are braver than their parents expect — and that the hour goes by in a way that makes Saturday mornings feel genuinely special.
We look forward to welcoming you. Book your trial class here.
